The purpose of the health office is to provide necessary health services to the students of Grandview school. The Health Office handles a variety of medical conditions for all of the children at the school. The school nurse and health aide see students with numerous conditions ranging from simple colds or runny noses to scraped knees and bruises from the playground to more serious conditions such as allergic reactions or broken bones. Parents are notified in case of serious illnesses or injuries; all other conditions are treated in the Health Office and the students return to classes.

One or two health aides normally staff the Health Office. The school nurse is responsible for several schools and travels between them on a weekly schedule. She is always available and will respond to any her schools if there is a need.

The Health Office is responsible for the administration of all medications. The health aide is able to dispense any medication if a parent or guardian delivers the medication and they complete a permission form allowing the Health Office to give medication. The school nurse can dispense over-the-counter medication such as pain reliever, antacid and cough medicine when a parent or guardian completes a signed Health History. STUDENTS ARE NOT TO BRING ANY KIND OF MEDICINE TO SCHOOL. Parents must bring all medications to the Health Office.

The Health Office also handles immunization records. Check with the Health Office or you physician to determine which immunizations are needed for your child’s age and grade level. A medical or religious objection to immunizations can be filed. Immunizations that are required by Indiana State Law include:

DtaP/DTP/DT/Td
Polio
Measles
Mumps
Rubella
Hepatitis B

The Health Office performs a variety of screening services throughout the year. The include vision and scoliosis screening. Vision screening is done for 1st and 3rd graders as well as for those referred with parent permission. Scoliosis screening is done for 5th graders.

The Health Office checks for head lice on an as needed basis. Head lice do not carry any disease, nor does their presense mean that you or your child is dirty. Head lice can infest anyone. To prevent further spread of head lice to other students the condition must be treated immediately. Once a student has been treated and is lice free you MUST bring your child in to be checked by the Health Office so they can be cleared to return to class. If the problem still exists the student will not be allowed to return to class. Students can not ride the bus to or from school until they have been cleared through the Health Office
