Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American man that was born into a family of five on January 15, 1929. Like many other children born around the same time, King was born into segregation, the separation between African Americans and white people. As he got older he liked to play sports, such as baseball, football, and basketball. He also liked to ride his bike and sing. When he got older he became devastated when one day he and two of his friends were told they could no longer play together because he was black and they were white. There were also signs that said “White Only” in front of playgrounds and restaurants. King didn’t understand at the time and his mother had to explain what segregation was to him. When Martin was in school he was a good student and he graduated from high school two years early. After he graduated from Morehouse he studied for a doctorate at Boston University. While he was there he met Coretta Scott and they got married. In 1963 Dr. King gave a speech to more than two-hundred thousand black and white people in Washington D.C. His speech was called “I have a dream.” |
