Each fall Grandview students in grades three through six take the ISTEP+ exam. The goal of the exam is to determine if students in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades meet statewide standards in reading, language arts and math. Students will complete a variety of tests that include multiple choice questions, writing, and mathematical problem solving. A complete review of Grandview’s ISTEP+ performance as well as other information is available from the Indiana Department of Education.
Students in grades two through six take NWEA tests three times a year.. The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), a computerized, adaptive test that accurately measures student achievement is given in the areas of reading, language arts, and math. Test scores are available immediately following a MAP test. Students receive immediate feedback, and teachers receive the information they need to improve learning when intervention is needed most.
We offer three suggestions for parents to help your child do better on the ISTEP+ and NWEA exams. First, make sure your child gets lots of sleep during the testing period. Alert students are always going to do better on these tests. Second, make sure your child has a good breakfast. Many of the testing sessions are in the morning before lunch and if your child is hungry, he/she will not be able to concentrate as well on the test questions. Third, show a positive attitude toward the testing process. Students who have a positive attitude will do better on the ISTEP+ and NWEA exams.
